Nurture, Nature  /  2016, acrylic on glass, size varies

This piece, composed of the 23 human chromosomes the letters of the English alphabet,  touches on my experience with IVF. Viewers are encouraged to mix and match the glass pieces to create a composition, thus influencing the design (of a human) with careful consideration and deliberation.

After having easily conceived our daughter at 39, I found my ovarian reserve depleted by age 41. After fertility drugs, two rounds of IUI, my spouse and I resorted to IVF with a donor egg. This piece allowed me to process the fact that this child would have none of my DNA - something that in my younger years I didn't think mattered. I was surprised to learn that I was attached to this.
